Cryostats for a Liquid Argon “Near Detector” in a Neutrino Beam

چکیده
This note sketches some preliminary specifications for the cryostats for liquid argon (density ρ = 1.396 g/cm, T = 87 K) time projection chambers of active mass in the range 40-333 metric tons, as would be suitable for use as “near detectors” in a neutrino beam such as the NuMI beam now under construction at Fermilab. A major cost driver of such a detector is its cryostat, which will have to be delivered in pieces to the underground site, and welded together in situ. An important constraint on the assembly of the detector is the size of the access shaft through which the parts must be delivered. Here, we use the dimensions of the vertical access shaft, shown in Fig. 1, to the NuMI/MINOS Near Detector Hall which is about 350′ underground, as shown in Fig. 2. Nominally, the largest rectangular aperture in the shaft is 1.75× 6.4 m. In this note, we suppose that this restricts components to have a maximum cross section (in the horizontal plane) of 1.5× 6 m.

Studies of a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber in a Magnetic Field and at High Pressure A Proposal to the DOE Advanced Detector Research Program
Recent results from SNO [1] and KamLAND [2] confirm the large mixing angle MSW solution to the solar neutrino problem, which implies that the full 3-generation neutrino mixing matrix can be studied in a new generation of accelerator-based neutrino experiments. A particular opportunity for this is to place a new, large (20 kton or more) neutrino detector in a NuMI off-axis beam [3], where parame...
متن کاملThe liquid Argon TPC: a powerful detector for future neutrino experiments and proton decay searches
We discuss the possibility of new generation neutrino and astroparticle physics experiments exploiting the liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) technique, following a graded strategy that envisions applications with increasing detector masses (from 100 ton to 100 kton). The ICARUS R&D program has already demonstrated that the technology is mature with the test of the T600 detector at ...

The recent dramatic success of the ICARUS 300-ton liquid-argon time-projection-chamber prototype [1] indicates that it is timely to review the possibilities for large-scale application of this technology for accelerator-based neutrino physics, neutrino astrophysics, and proton decay [2]. A full exploration of the MNS neutrino mixing matrix (and extensions if sterile neutrinos exist) should be p...

Neutrinos have been a source of excitement lately. While the neutrino mixing has been expected, its pattern has taken us by surprise. The first evidence of physics beyond the standard model is here and more excitement is likely on the way.. Fermilab has a unique opportunity to take a lead in the neutrino physics in the next decade or so. Our recent major investments put us in an envi-able posit...

This report summarises the conclusions from the detector group of the International Scoping Study of a future Neutrino Factory and Super-Beam neutrino facility. The baseline detector options for each possible neutrino beam are defined as follows: 1. A very massive (Megaton) water Cherenkov detector is the baseline option for a sub-GeV Beta Beam and Super Beam facility. 2. There are a number of ...
